Our verdict · Coding agent
Windsurf still exists, under a new name: on June 2, 2026 Cognition renamed it Devin Desktop and made an agent command center the default view. For $20 you get an editor that runs its own Devin Local agent, cloud agents and third-party agents such as Claude Agent and Codex side by side. It's a good editor in transition: Cascade, the agent people chose Windsurf for, was replaced, and the plans don't publish quota numbers.
Pick it if
- Developers who want local and cloud agents managed from one board
- Teams that want to run several vendors' agents in one editor
- Existing Windsurf users (plans, extensions and keybindings carried over)
Skip it if
- You chose Windsurf for Cascade specifically
- You need published usage numbers before you buy
- You want a product whose shape has settled
People still search for Windsurf, but the product they're looking for changed in June. On June 2, 2026, Cognition, which bought Windsurf in July 2025 (TechCrunch), renamed it Devin Desktop and rebuilt it around an agent command center (Cognition's announcement). The editor is still there, compatible with Windsurf and VS Code extensions, keybindings and language servers. What changed is the agent and the default view. This review covers the product as it stands, from Cognition's published pricing and announcement, against our six criteria.
Scores
- Speed to a first version3/5
Quick inside a project; like any editor, a new app needs a stack and a host.
- Depth before the wall4/5
Local and cloud agents, subagents and a Kanban of sessions suit real codebases; the agent layer is new.
- Backend and data2/5
Brings no backend.
- Ownership and exit5/5
Your repo, a VS Code-compatible editor, and agents from several vendors.
- Pricing predictability3/5
Flat, published plan prices; quotas are described, not numbered.
- Team and production readiness3/5
Teams admin dashboard and central billing; SSO only on Enterprise; the product changed shape in June.
Overall 3.3/5, the plain average of six criteria. Scored by Mahmoud Halat from published specs and docs, checked Nov 1, 2026. How we score.

Source: devin.ai/pricing (windsurf.com/pricing redirects here), Windsurf is now Devin Desktop. Prices checked Nov 1, 2026, before tax. No numeric quotas are published for any plan.
The headline prices are simple: Free, Pro at $20 a month and Max at $200, with Teams at $80 a month for the plan plus $40 per full developer seat (so a five-person team is $280 a month). Pro includes frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and SpaceXAI, free use of Cognition's own SWE-2 model, and Devin cloud agents, with extra usage at API pricing.
What the page doesn't publish is numbers. Quotas are "increased" or "significantly higher" and refresh daily and weekly, so, as with Cursor and Claude Code, you learn the real ceiling by using it. For existing Windsurf subscribers the announcement says plans and pricing stayed the same through the rename.
What changed from Windsurf
Three changes matter if you chose Windsurf before June:
- The default view is now an Agent Command Center: a Kanban board of local and cloud agent sessions, with "Spaces" that group sessions, pull requests and files and share context across agents.
- Cascade was replaced. Devin Local, a Rust rewrite that Cognition says is up to 30% more token efficient and supports subagents, is the new local agent. Cascade remained available until July 1 for gradual migration.
- Other vendors' agents run inside it. Through the Agent Client Protocol, Codex, Claude Agent and OpenCode can run in Devin Desktop alongside Cognition's own agents.
What it does well now
Devin Desktop's distinctive idea is managing many agents at once, local and cloud, from one board. For a developer who already runs several agents, or a team that wants to use more than one vendor's agent without switching editors, that's genuinely useful, and the editor underneath is a mature VS Code-compatible one with unlimited Tab completions even on Free.
Where it struggles
It's a product in transition. People who picked Windsurf for Cascade's behaviour now have a different agent; the agent command center is a new way of working; and the quotas aren't published. Single sign-on is Enterprise only, and Teams pricing (a platform fee plus seats) is higher than Cursor's or Copilot's for small teams. We'd give it six months to settle before standardising a team on it.
Ownership
Like the other editors, it works on your repository. Nothing to export; your code and settings are portable to VS Code-family editors.
