Best AI app builder for non-technical founders: ranked for getting an MVP live

Lovable, Replit, Bolt, Base44 and v0 ranked for founders who don't code: our rubric re-weighted for speed, a managed backend and a predictable bill. Nov 2026.

The short answer

Lovable is the best AI app builder for most non-technical founders: the most polished first version, a managed backend you don't have to configure, Git sync on every plan, and per-message credits you can budget. Replit Agent is the pick if you want more infrastructure and room to grow and can live with effort-based pricing. Bolt suits founders who want to watch and tweak the code; Base44 is the quickest route to a simple app with login; v0 fits once a developer is involved. Disclosure: Mahmoud has built with Lovable and won its Shipped season 1 Grand Prize; Lovable has never paid us.

A founder who doesn't code needs different things from a builder than a developer does. You need a working app with sign-in and data without deciding how the database works, a bill you can predict, and a way out if the app succeeds. You care less about team controls in month one and less about how far the tool scales before a developer takes over. So we took the six rubric scores from each review and re-weighted them for that situation, instead of using the plain average from the reviews hub.

The ranking

Weights: Speed ×2 · Depth ×1 · Backend ×2 · Exit ×1 · Pricing ×1.5 · Team ×0.5

Each product's six rubric scores, re-weighted for this use and averaged. Scores and prices from vendor docs, checked Nov 1, 2026.

Speed and a managed backend count double, because they decide whether you launch at all. Pricing predictability counts one and a half, because a founder paying out of pocket can't absorb a surprise bill. Depth and exit count once. Team controls count half, because they matter after you've hired. Change the weights and the order changes; the scores behind every number are explained in each review.

What the re-weighting changes: on the plain average, v0 sits above Bolt and Base44 sits last. For a non-technical founder, v0 drops to the bottom because it leaves the backend to you, and Base44 climbs because its database and login work on every plan, including Free.

1. Lovable: the most finished first version

Lovable turns a description into a polished, hosted app with Lovable Cloud (managed Supabase underneath) handling database, auth and storage. It scores 5 on speed and 4 on backend, and its credits are priced per message, so a small change costs about half a credit and a whole page about two (Lovable's examples). Pro is $25 a month for 100 credits plus 5 a day. Git sync works on every plan, so the code is yours.

Watch out for: once Lovable Cloud is on, it can't be disconnected, and moving the database out is a manual migration. Lovable-built apps have also been the subject of the best-known security research on AI-built apps; run our pre-launch security checklist before real users sign up. Full detail: Lovable review.

2. Replit Agent: the most room to grow

Replit gives you an agent plus a whole workspace: database with point-in-time restore (7 days on Core, 28 on Pro), publishing, secrets, and an IDE when you want to look under the hood. It scores 5 on backend and 4 on depth, the highest depth of any builder here, so it carries a project further before you need a developer. Core is $20 a month with $20 of credits and a Free Mode for everyday work.

Watch out for: Replit prices agent work by effort and doesn't publish per-checkpoint rates, so you can't price a month in advance; it asks before each paid action. Full detail: Replit Agent review, or Replit vs Lovable if you're choosing between the top two.

3. Bolt: for founders who want to see the code

Bolt runs a full development environment in your browser, writes the app, creates a database when it needs one, and syncs both ways with GitHub. Pro is $25 for 10M tokens that roll over. It's as fast as Lovable to a first version.

Watch out for: the Bolt Database can't currently be migrated to Supabase. If there's any chance you'll outgrow Bolt, choose Supabase when you start the project (Pro and Teams). Token use also grows as the project grows. Full detail: Bolt review, Lovable vs Bolt.

4. Base44: the quickest simple app

Base44, owned by Wix, has a database, login and analytics built into every plan, including Free, which makes it the fastest route to a simple working app. Starter is $16 a month billed annually.

Watch out for: GitHub sync needs the Builder plan ($40 annually), running the app without Base44 isn't documented, and depth is the lowest here. It's best for a simple app you're happy to keep on the platform. Full detail: Base44 review, Base44 vs Lovable.

5. v0: once a developer is involved

v0 writes clean Next.js and React that deploys to Vercel in a click and syncs to GitHub on Free, and it's the best here at turning a Figma file into real UI. For a founder working alone, though, it leaves the backend choices to you, and new free users get 7 messages a day and a one-time $5 credit.

Watch out for: you'll be choosing and wiring a database yourself. If you have a technical co-founder or a freelancer, v0 is a strong choice. Full detail: v0 review, Bolt vs v0.

Before you choose

Three questions decide it faster than any ranking:

Question If yes If no
Will a developer join within six months? Favour GitHub sync and a database you can move: Lovable with your own Supabase, Bolt with Supabase, or v0 Favour the managed backend: Lovable Cloud, Replit or Base44
Is your budget fixed each month? Lovable or Base44, which publish per-message credit costs Replit is fine if you can absorb variation
Does the app hold sensitive data? Run the security checklist and get a second pair of eyes before launch Still run the checklist

Estimate your first month with the build-cost calculator. And if you're not sure your idea needs an app at all, the decision tool answers that first; plenty of "apps" are a well-built prompt or a skill.

Questions people ask

What is the best AI app builder if I can't code?

On our rubric re-weighted for non-technical founders, Lovable ranks first (3.81 out of 5) and Replit Agent a close second (3.75). Lovable gives the most finished first version with the backend set up for you and per-message credits you can budget; Replit gives more infrastructure and room to grow, with a less predictable bill. Mahmoud has built with Lovable and won a Lovable prize, which we disclose.

Can I build a real startup with an AI app builder?

You can build and launch a real first version and get paying users, and many founders have. What changes later is who maintains it. Once the app has real users and complex logic, most teams move the code into their own repository and bring in a developer or a coding agent. Choosing a builder with GitHub sync and a database you can move makes that step much cheaper.

Which AI app builder is cheapest for an MVP?

Base44 has the lowest entry price ($16 a month billed annually) and Lovable, Bolt and Replit all start at $20-25. For a typical first month the bill is usually one entry plan; our build-cost calculator estimates it from your own message counts for the builders that publish per-message costs.

Why isn't v0 higher?

v0 is excellent at front-end code, but it leaves the backend choice to you and its free tier is tight for new users. For a founder who needs a database, login and hosting decided for them, that's a real cost. If you have a developer helping, v0 moves up.
